The Tallit is a religious garment that is used by the Jewish People for praying. It is a square piece of fabric, usually wool, with four fringes on its ends.

Until the Middle Ages, the Prayer Shawl served as a part of everyday clothing and was made of wool or linen. Now the Tallit is used only for rituals, it expresses enveloping yourself in the supreme grace and obedience to the will of God.

The Tallit or prayer shawl can be made from different fabric types and have various design. Just as the most traditional textile for the Tallit is wool, the most traditional colors are white with blue or black stripes. However, the most important part of the Tallit is not the garment itself, but the fringes on its corners.

The fringes on the Tallit are called Tzitzit, and symbolize God’s commandments.

It is written in the Bible:”The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘Throughout the generations to come you and to make tassels on the corners of your garments, with a blue cord on each tassel. You will have these tassels to look at and so you will remember all the commands of the Lord’ ‘’ Numbers 15:37-38.

The Tzitzit must be tied in a special way. The knots on the fringes represent the 613 Commandments (Mitzvot) that are written in the Torah. The God’s Word is passed on to the believers by these fringes.

Every Jewish man, starting from his Bar Mitzvah at the age of 13, must wear a Tallit in the synagogue during prayer.

In the last years, more and more Believers are beginning to wear the Tallit during their prayers. Wearing the Prayer Shawl creates a very individual and confidential place for a prayer. It separates a prayer from the outside world and helps him to concentrate on his conversation with God.
