The month Adar is loved by all the Jewish people. This first spring month brings us the most joyful and cheerful holiday – Purim. This holiday was established in memory of the miraculous salvation of Jewish people that occurred more than 2,500 years ago. It is described in the Book of Esther.

Purim is a time for joy and masquerades, wine drinking and making noise with ratchets. But not only clownish performances are required on Purim. There are two lows that are directly related to the topic of this article.

Each Jew must send at least two ready to eat food items to at least one friend. This low is about giving gifts on Purim to the poor and it is called Mishloach manot. This dearly cherished tradition by the Jewish nation symbolizes first of all sharing the joyous feeling of celebration. The meaning of this commandment is to strengthen the brotherhood between Jewish people and to spread joy.

These two commandments correlate with the Esther Scroll as means to bring Jewish nation together refuting by this Hamman’s words to King Xerxes: “There is a certain people dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom who keep themselves separate.” He wanted to emphasize the lack of unity among the Jews. But Esther said to Mordecai: “Go, gather together all the Jews”

For we are one nation and these commandments were given to strengthen the profound bond between all Jews.
